Greetings from futekiya! Another year, another chance to watch more BL! Check out these BL drama adaptations and brush up on your must-watch list.


Kei x Yaku: Abunai Aibou (Kei x Yaku: Dangerous Partners)

Release Date: January 13, 2022

First up on the list is an action-thriller mystery adapted from Kaoruhara Yoshie’s manga with the same title, Kei x Yaku: Abunai Aibou is sure to keep you on edge. The premise introduces us to a case from three years ago, a disappearance known as the “Joker Case,” which went unresolved. Current rising interest in the said case resulted in a call for a second examination of evidence which brought in Investigator Ichiro Kinoshita from the Public Security Bureau of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. However, the mission Ichiro got was not one he was expecting: to spy on a gang led by a mysterious young head, Shiro Hanabusa, and get close to him. When Ichiro discovers a shocking truth about Shiro, he is led to a fake lover’s contract with the latter, which makes his undercover mission a lot more complicated—directed by Hatano Takafumi and starring actors Inukai Atsuhiro and Suzuki Nobuyuki.


Boku mo Aitsu mo Shinrodesu (Both He and I are Grooms)

Boku mo Aitsu mo Shinrodesu features the wedding day of elementary school teacher Ryosuke Seto and lemon farmer Mizuki Aikawa. What was supposed to be a joyous occasion takes a sudden turn when Mizuki finds out that Ryosuke hasn’t told anyone in his family that he is marrying a man. Cue furious outbursts, a big fight between two family heads, and an appearance of an ex-boyfriend. Will Ryosuke and Mizuki be able to overcome these hardships together? Directed by Tanaka Koji and starring actors Hayama Shono and Iijima Hiroki.


Zettai BL ni Naru Sekai vs. Zettai BL ni Naritakunai Otoko 2 (A World Where Everything Definitely Becomes BL vs. The Man Who Definitely Doesn’t Want To Be In A BL 2)

Release Date: March 20, 2022

Yes, you got it right! Another season! Zettai BL ni Naru Sekai vs. Zettai BL ni Naritakunai Otoko 2 is back again, with more of our protagonist, “Mob,” struggling in the world of BL. Continuing from when “Mob” confessed to his classmate Kikuchi, thus shedding his role of a passerby and becoming the protagonist of the BL world, everything seemed to be going well until Kikuchi decides to go back to his handsome ex-boyfriend, Igarashi, leaving “Mob” to become a mere passerby again. Alone again, “Mob” decides to start anew. What does the BL world have in store for him? Watch and see! It is directed by Miki Koichiro and features Inukai Atsuhiro once again as “Mob” amongst other handsome actors reprising their roles.


Cherry Mahou the Movie: 30-sai Made Doteida to Mahoutsukai ni Narerurashi (Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!: The Movie)

Release Date: April 8, 2022

Sequel to the series, 30-sai made Dotei Da to Mahotsukai ni Narerurashi, Cherry Mahou the Movie: 30-sai Made Doteida to Mahoutsukai ni Narerurashi is back with our resident mind reader Kiyoshi Adachi and his now boyfriend, Yuichi Kurosawa. Everything was going smoothly for the two until Kiyoshi received an order to be transferred. How will the two deal with the impending distance looming over them? Will their relationship break apart? Directed by Kazama Hiroki and re-starring Akaso Eiji and Machida Keita.


Fukou-kun wa Kiss Suru Shikanai! (Mr. Unlucky has No Choice but to Kiss!)

Release Date: April 21, 2022

Opposites do attract in Fukou-kun wa Kiss Suru Shikanai! This features college student Kouta Fukuhara known for his extremely bad luck, posing problems everywhere. Enter Naoya Shinomiya, which has extremely good luck. Feeling bad for Kouta, Naoya decides to help him out and share his luck with him. But to do that, the two of them have to be close to each other, which results in feelings not expected. Directed by Kanasugi Hiroko and starring actors Sota Ryosuke and Sato Yusuke.


Koi Kogare Utae (Sing in Love)

Release Date: May 27, 2022

Koi Kogare Utae is a psychological romance drama featuring music. The story centers on the temporary elementary teacher, Jin Hiritani, who is on his way to a permanent position when a traumatic incident pulls him under in deep darkness. Three months later, we find Jin, who is still trying to get over the darkness that overwhelmed him, being stirred by memories and feelings of the said experience by a mysterious, charismatic rapper, Kai. To make it worse, Kai seems to be obsessed with Jin. A story of two men’s struggles, healing, love, and music. Stars actors Yu Inaba and Kenshin Endo.


Old-Fashion Cupcake

Release Date: June 13, 2022

Light and sweet? Slice of Life? Old Fashion Cupcake definitely caters to that. The story follows the 39-year-old Nozue, whose daily routine is summarized in three things: sleep, wake, and work. While Nozue is a well-respected boss and loved by everyone at work, he can’t help but feel something is missing and spends his days in boredom. His feelings don’t go unnoticed under his subordinate’s eye, the cold 29-year-old Togawa, who unexpectedly reaches out and takes Nozue to places where he can feel young again. As the two spend private time with each other, they also grow closer. Will this closeness result in something else? Directed by Ayaka Kato and starring actors Kouhei Takeda and Tatsunari Kimura.


Sempai! Danjite Koi de wa! (Sempai! Anything but Romance!)

Release Date: June 16, 2022

Romance is in the air as one of Shinta Harekawa’s works, Sempai! Danjite Koi de wa! is also up for live-action adaptation. It features the relationship of two work colleagues: Atsushi Yanase, an outstanding CGI artist who considers everyone beneath him, and Yuki Kaneda, a stoic newbie animator with a shy side. With the former roped into training the latter, will things work out between them? Produced by MBS and starring Toshiki Seto and Shuichiro Naito, who are known for their roles in the Kamen Rider franchise.


Bokura no Shokutaku (Our Dining Table)

Release Date: TBA


Yes! One of Mita Ori’s works, Bokura no Shokutaku is also up for a live-action adaptation. The premise introduces us to salaryman Yutaka Hozumi who has trouble eating around other people despite his knack for cooking. But everything changes when he meets two brothers, Minoru and Tane Ueda, who are so far apart in age. Having amazed the little brother, Tane, with his cooking the first time they met, the next meeting finds Yutaka being confronted again by the brothers (mainly Tane) to teach them how to make Yutaka’s special rice balls. Yutaka agrees to teach them, not wanting to break the little brother’s heart and being intimidated by the elder brother. Lessons turn into meals, and Yutaka looks forward to meals with the two brothers. While the release date and cast are yet to be announced, this is something to watch out for.


Minato Shouji Coin Laundry

Last but not least, Yuzu Tsubaki’s work Minato Shouji Coin Laundry is also up for a live-action TV drama adaptation, with other details such as production and casting to be announced later. The story centers around Akira Minato, who inherited his grandfather’s store, the Minato Shouji Coin Laundry. A former company employee and now in his thirties, Akira is looking forward to taking it easy to manage the shop, which the local community loves. One day, high schooler Shintaro Katsuki comes in as a customer, and the two quickly become friends despite their age difference. But things become complicated when Akira is suddenly revealed as gay to Shintaro. Will anything change between them? Wait and find out!
